ONTARIO–The Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario fell to the Santa Cruz Warriors, 131-98, in front of a crowd of 3,108 at Citizens Business Bank Arena on Friday night. Brice Johnson led the way for the Clippers, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to record the team’s only double-double. Johnson, who is on assignment from the Los Angeles Clippers, also had two steals.
“It’s the first game of the season, so obviously there’s a lot of things we need to clean up,” said AC Clippers head coach Casey Hill. “The good thing is that we’ve got a talented team. We’ve just got to help them realize that.”
The AC Clippers struggled out of the gate, trailing 17-4 after seven minutes of play. However, they managed to cut the Warriors’ lead to just five at the conclusion of the first quarter, thanks to a 12-1 run. But early in the second half, the Warriors began to run away and never look back, led by Quinn Cook, who led all scorers with 30 points.
Cook also handed out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Georges Niang also added 18 for the Warriors.
Jawun Evans, also on assignment from the LA Clippers, added four points and Jamil Wilson and C.J. Williams, (signed to two-way contracts) each contributed nine points. Tyrone Wallace added 13.
The Clippers hit the road to take on Northern Arizona on Saturday and return home for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday night against Iowa.
