Erie, PA—The Agua Caliente Clippers came up short against the Erie Bayhawks on the road on Wednesday afternoon, falling 121-101. With the loss, the Clippers are 17-20 overall.
After swapping leads in the opening minutes of play, the Clippers took a five-point advantage into the second frame, thanks to nine first quarter points from J.J. O’Brien and seven from Tyler Roberson. The Clippers went up by seven in the second quarter, but Erie responded with an 11-point run to take the lead and go up by as many as 10. Agua Caliente fought back and trailed by only five at the break, as O’Brien hit a three and Ike Iroegbu drew a shooting foul on back-to-back possessions to close the quarter.
The Clippers managed to keep the Erie lead within reach for much of the third quarter, trailing by three with five minutes left in the frame, but the two teams exchanged baskets and the visitors couldn’t go on any sort of run to take the lead. The Clippers went into the fourth down eight points and Erie capitalized on turnovers to stretch their lead out to 20 halfway through the final quarter of play, which would be a deficit too large for the Clippers to overcome.
All five of the Clippers starters scored in double-figures, with O’Brien leading the way with 23 points, while Roberson recorded a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. Dakarai Allen had a career-high 20 points, while Iroegbu and LaDontae Henton added 17 and 15, respectively, to round out the scoring effort.
The Clippers finish their road trip on Friday, as they take on the Memphis Hustle in a 5 p.m. tip (PST). The series is currently tied at one game apiece.
