Late game comeback not enough for Clips

Ontario, CA— An Agua Caliente Clippers comeback came up short against the Northern Arizona Suns on Sunday night at home, as they fell 113-109. The Clippers, back from a five-game road trip, slipped to 18-21 overall on the season.

The two teams exchanged leads in the first quarter until Northern Arizona got hot from three, going 4-for-5 from three in the first to take a 13-point advantage into the second frame. J.J. O’Brien went for 17 in the first half to keep the lead within reach, as the Clippers went into the break trailing by 13.

The Clippers found an offensive rhythm in the third quarter, as C.J. Williams poured in 10 points on 2-for-4 shooting from deep and O’Brien added nine points to put the Clippers within four heading into the final quarter. Northern Arizona went up by as many as 11 in the final frame, and the Clippers run ultimately came too late, as they pulled within three points with 20 seconds to play. Ike Iroegbu completed a three-point play with seven seconds left to put the Clippers within two, but the home team was forced to send the Suns to the line, where they went 3-for-4 to grab the win.

The Clippers adjusted on the defensive end in the second half, forcing Northern Arizona to shoot just 18-percent from deep, but 53-percent shooting from beyond the arc in the first half proved to be too much for Agua Caliente to overcome.

O’Brien led the Clippers for the tenth time this season, going for 31 points, a career-high 10 assists and seven rebounds. Dakarai Allen added a career-high 22 points, while Iroegbu chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds. Williams, in his first game back from an ankle injury, scored all his 10 points in the third to position the Clippers to make a run. Tyler Roberson led the rebounding effort with eight boards.

The Clippers are off the next 11 days for the All-Star break and return to action on February 22, when they take on the South Bay Lakers at home in a 7 p.m. tip (PST). Fans can stay up-to-date on team news by following the team on Twitter (@ACClippers) or visiting Full season membership, group, and single tickets for the 2017-18 Agua Caliente Clippers season are on sale now.
